Raul Ruiz’s Super PAC Hypocrisy

January 25, 2016

Ruiz_HMPThis weekend Raul Ruiz hypocritically marked the anniversary of the Citizens United decision by decrying the effects of Super PACs on politics, despite having befitted from their spending in his previous elections. Ruiz left no doubts on his position, saying he was “committed to overturn this reckless decision.”

But in 2013, Ruiz was committed to helping promote one of the very Super PACs that spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to get him into office in the first place. Ruiz gave a testimonial in a highly-produced promotional video for House Majority PAC, a Democrat Super PAC that spent more than $330,000 to boost Ruiz in the 2012 election. House Majority PAC spent another $200,000 in 2014 on Ruiz’s reelection.

Because Ruiz so strongly opposes Super PAC spending, he should proactively decline any potential outside spending on his behalf right now before ad reservations are made for this fall. Will Ruiz stand by his newfound principles or will he continue to welcome Super PAC spending on his behalf?

NRCC Comment: “After appearing in a promotional video for a Super PAC that has spent more than $500,000 on his behalf, it couldn’t be more hypocritical for Raul Ruiz to decry Super PAC spending in elections. 36th District voters deserve better than this kind of Washington doublespeak from a hypocritical politician like Ruiz.” – NRCC Spokesman Zach Hunter
